The Elephant in the Pew

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his speech well over 40 years ago – “We must face the sad fact that at the eleven o’clock hour on Sunday morning, when we stand to sing, we stand in the most segregated hour in America.” It’s time to confront the elephant in the pew –the lack of church diversity – this is not a White church, Black church, Asian church, Latino or Indian church issue…this is a body of Christ issue.

The people we tend to like are the people who show us the respect we deserve, or at least that we think we deserve. The ones we don’t like are the ones we sense don’t like us, or who won’t put up with our particular traits. If however, rather than maneuvering for the respect or regard of others (which is the nature of pride) we give them our respect, because we recognize in them their inherent God-given worth, then we’ll be promoting harmony in the Church; and of course the un-looked for result will most probably be that they’ll respond to us with the same respect they’ve received. The Great Commission is clear that the mission of the church is to make disciples of all “nations” [ethnicities] (Matthew 28:19). We cannot fulfill the great commission effectively without celebrating the diversity of the Church, just as God does. So how can a diverse body like the Church achieve the sort of unity that God desires? Perhaps by becoming more like Christ as we grow into who is our Head. I’m just sayin’...

Peace & Blessings

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism;”

Ephesians 4:1-5 (NIV)

A Biblical Perspective for PBBC’s Mandate…

“GO... Make Disciples”

Ephesians 4:8, 11-15

“When He ascended on high, He led captives in His train and gave gifts to men… It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in knowledge of the son of God and become mature of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants tossed back and forth by the waves and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.”
